Is Computer-Based testing Right For Me?
You may want to consider computer-based testing (CBT) if you want to
- take the LAST, ATS–W, ATAS, or one of the following CSTs: English Language Arts, Social Studies, or Students with Disabilities;
- read and answer multiple-choice questions on computer;
- type your responses to constructed-response assignments;
- take the test in New York State in Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Long Island, New York City, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Watertown, or White Plains;
- take the test outside of New York State;
- take the test on a weekday or Saturday;
- take the test on a day or in a month when there is no scheduled paper-based test administration;
- schedule your test appointment for a time that is convenient for you.
Before registering for a computer-based test, you should note the following:
- Test fees are higher for computer-based tests than for paper-based tests.
- Registration for computer-based testing is by Internet only; payment must be made by VISA or MasterCard.
- Test appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and seating is limited.
- You must wait 30 days after taking a computer-based test before retaking the same test on computer.
Finding information about computer-based testing is easy!
On the Web site, whenever there is information that is different for paper-based and computer-based testing, you will see tabs at the top of the page that allow you to click back and forth between the two sections. An example of these navigational tabs is shown below.

Registration and testing information that is specific to computer-based testing may also be identified by the picture of a computer that appears on the left. Just look for this icon or use the tabs to find CBT information!
